Boberg XR45-S
Unlike Europe, in the United States, there is a huge request
on the gun market for the small handguns chambered in some of the major caliber
cartridges. The hard-hitting .45ACP established itself as a round which can
neutralize the threat with only a single shot. The problem with .45ACP handguns
is they often tend to be too large for a currently popular method of
concealment: pocket carry.

Considering that issue, arms maker and inventor Arne Boberg,
founder of Boberg Arms, developed the innovative XR Series of semi-autos
chambered in 9mm and .45, respectively. Despite its chic and modern look, the
Boberg is actually a timeless amalgam of designs, some more than a hundred
years old. As the most futuristic gun, the Boberg pistols begin with the
modification of famous British design at the turn of the XIX
century, which used a rear-feeding magazine system and was known as Mars
Automatic Pistol.
The Boberg Arms XR45-S is very unusual firearm due to its
impressively minuscule size, but also its strange operating method and magazine
construction. The entire recoil and firing control problem found on many
compact guns has been eliminated by Arne's unique design. The novelty of the
action consists of relatively uncommon locking system coupled with a unique
loading system. The XR45-S has a different type of feeding mechanism, loading
rounds from the back, nose first and nose down, and it is placed under the barrel
rather than behind it. Though technically different, it could be
considered a pistol version of the bullpup rifle because you can have a
longer barrel within a shorter and more compact shoulder weapon while the
chamber is directly above the magazine well.
The Boberg XR45-S is the shortest
on the list at 5.77 inches long wide and has a 3.75-inch barrel making it the
smallest .45 semi-auto in the world. Due to the non-traditional reverse feed
process, the Boberg has no need for a classic, heavy recoil spring to absorb
recoil by compressing. As an additional
benefit, the "backwards" feeding operation allows the use of a
smaller and lighter main spring, meaning that the slide is really easy to rack
for loading or unloading. Generally, this design concept means that the Boberg
is a very soft shooting handgun producing less recoil than most other firearms
of similar size and weight.
The XR45-S loading cycle is more
complicated than traditional pistols requesting a special forward sloping
six-round magazine, where the cartridges are loaded nose down as the top round
of the magazine would be stripped during the rearward movement of the
slide instead of when the slide returns forward.
Because the Boberg feeding
mechanism is built to tight tolerances, this ultra-compact is a bit more
finicky when it comes to ammunition selection, hence manufacturer posts a list
of compatible and incompatible .45 ACP loads. The Boberg is developed for very
easy field stripping with a single, large takedown lever, but requests a small
quantity of non-metal moly-based anti-seize lubricant at 22 lubrication points.
With overall size far smaller
than other compact 45's this high-quality handgun is for those people who want
to load .45ACP ammunition in a sub-compact pistol. Boberg has already been
noticed in the US market, and gun experts anticipate this will soon become
the benchmark by which compact 45's will be measured.
