8x60/8x60mmMauser & RWS – 8 x 60 mm

The 8x60mm Mauser was introduced after World War I for German civilian shooters and hunters, as they were not allowed to own rifles in military calibers like the 8x57mm Mauser.

The 8x60mmS (the S means it is intended for 8.2 mm (.323 in) groove diameter bullets) is an uncommon rimless bottlenecked centerfire cartridge of German origin, dating back to the interbellum period between World War I and World War II. The history of the cartridge and its evolution are closely related to the de-militarization of post-war Germany.

After such a devastating war as World War I, the victorious Western Powers imposed a series of harsh treaties upon the defeated nations. Inter alia, the Treaty of Versailles forbade the ownership of standard military weapons and ammunition by German civilians. However, civilian hunters didn't want to give up on this great round, so a new cartridge was designed by the German arms manufacturer Deutsche Waffen und Munitionsfabriken (DWM). Extending the 7.92x57mm Mauser cartridge case by 3 mm created the 8x60mmS. By the European common cartridge’s nomenclature, the 8 denotes the 8 mm bullet caliber, and the 60 denotes the 60 mm (2.362 in) case length.

The 8x60mm S bullet diameter is 8.20 mm (.323 in), as found in the 8x57mm IS. The 8x60mmS can, due to its 83.6 mm (3.291 in) overall length, easily be chambered in standard-sized Mauser 98 bolt action rifles. As the new cartridge used the same bullet, 8x57 or 8x57R rifles can be easily converted to their appropriate 8x60 derivative with a simple chamber lengthening job (reamed out by 2 mm plus 1 mm of neck extension) not costly, and many were so altered, in order to be legally licensed.

The 8x60mm S offers, compared to its parent cartridge, the 8x57mm IS, about 1 to 2% extra muzzle velocity due to its slightly larger case capacity and higher maximum operating pressure. This results in a flatter trajectory and better performance at a longer range.

This operation was easily performed on Gewehr 98 and Karabiner 98k rifles. Since this chamber reaming operation is also possible for earlier I-bore rifles, 8x60mm chambered rifles (without the S or any other further additions) also exist. 8x60mm rifles sport the earlier tighter 8.07 mm (.318 in) I-bore as found in the 8x57mm I.

The 8x60mm is a confusing round because it comes in a confusing variety of types and loads. Like the 8x57mm Mauser, the 8x60mm Mauser was and still is produced in 4 versions: 8x60mmJ, 8x60mmS, 8x60RmmJ and 8x60RmmS. Most people assume the "J" (0.318) patrone was introduced first, but it wasn't the "S" bullet (0.323). This was probably to make use of the many surplus 0.318 bore rifles then available in Europe. Mostly Mauser Gewehr 98 and Karabiner 98k rifles were rechambered for this caliber. While the 8x60mm S case could handle up to 405 MPa (58,740 psi) pressure, both J (.318" diameter) and S (.323" diameter, versions were available in both rimmed and rimless case styles in all load types.

Except this, there are three more variations of the above and include a standard and a magnum loading, as well as one called the Magnum-Bombe loads. The case dimensions for Standard, Magnum and the Magnum-Bombe loadings are all the same. The only difference is powder, velocity, and bullet weight. In the standard load, the 8x60mm is approximately the equivalent of the .30-06. The heaviest magnum loads are approximate to the .300 H&H performance level. African hunters did not consider it any better than the .300 H&H.

To avoid potentially serious accidents, it is important to distinguish clearly between cartridges loaded for these two different bullet diameters and only fire them inappropriately chambered/barreled rifles.

The 8x60mm S offers very good penetrating ability due to a fast twist rate that enables it to fire long, heavy bullets with a high sectional density. It is a popular round in Europe and has been used to some extent in Africa, although most African hunters do not consider it any better than the .300 H&H. It has sufficient power for North American big game and could be used for anything the .30-06 can handle. On the heavy game, such as moose, elk, or grizzly bear, it would have the edge over the .30-06 if one used maximum loads.

The 8x60mm S is very popular in European countries like France, where the possession of rifles in their original military caliber is tightly regulated. The 8x60mm S can be used in countries that ban the civil use of former or current military caliber.

The popularity of the 8x60mm S peaked just after World War I and continued throughout the 1930s and 1940s. Today the cartridge is almost obsolete. Only two mainstream manufacturers (RWS and Prvi Partizan), continue to produce the cartridge for hunting. Handloaders can also produce this round by altering a .30-06 Springfield case and using a standard 8 mm bullet. Prvi Partizan is a major supplier of brass components for European 8x60mm S Handloaders.

.450/.400 Nitro Express 3 1/4" - 10.4 x 82mm R

.450/.400 Nitro Express 3 1/4" - 10.4 x 82mm R

Synonyms:   .450/.400 Express 3 1/4" / .450//.400 Express 3 1/4" FRASER //.400 CERTUS // .450/400 Extra Long // .450/.400 Fraser // .450/.400 Magnum Nitro Express 3.25" // Hunting//.450/400 3¼-inch BPE (Nitro For Black)/Nitro Express/

With English cartridges, the primary thing to remember is the first set of numbers showing the cartridge family that it's based on. The second number indicates the bore size, and the third number group represents the cartridge length. So a .450/400 3¼ -inch is built on the .450 cartridge family (actually, this family ranging of .405 - .411 caliber) and finally, it has a .400 bore and is 3¼-inch long.

The .450/400 Nitro Express is a series of .40 caliber rimmed bottlenecked cases which were initially intended for a black powder single shot and double rifles. Through their evolution, the cartridges have multiple variants of the brass lengths ranging from 3¼ inches to 2⅜ inches (82.55 mm - 60.33 mm).
.450 Nitro Express 3 ¼ Nitro-for-Black
Like most of the Nitro Express bottlenecked cartridges, the .450-400 3 ¼ ” Nitro Express derives from an earlier straight .450 Express black powder cartridge brass necked down to accept a .40 (10.3 mm) caliber bullets with numerous variants.  Designed in England in 1880, from 1899, it has been loaded with Cordite (British type of "cord powder") marketed under the name of NE or Nitro Express the 3¼-inch version became one of the most famous cartridges ever devised.

Nitro versions of these cartridges were available with rims in two thicknesses. The Nitro for Black version was stoked with 45 to 48 grains of cordite and with bullets from 270 to 316 grains. The later, thicker Nitro Express version is .042-inch and exists because of the great length of the case neck. In black powder versions it extracted easily, but, on the Nitro version, any slight bit of corrosion in the chamber caused the case to stick, and the rim would pull off.

Kynoch Ammunition 450-400 3¼-inch Nitro Express
Taking it into account noted London rifle makers W.J. Jeffery & Co eliminated the long neck in his version and designed a similar three-inch .40-caliber  Nitro round, called .450/.400 Jeffery Nitro Express 3", better known as the .400 Jeffery, but it is not interchangeable with .450/400 Nitro Express.

Loaded with 56 - 60 grains of Cordite and a projectile of 400 grains, offered at those times remarkable velocity at the barrel mouth of 2,200 fps (670 m/s) and a massive muzzle power of 4,300 ft-lbs (5,830 Joules). Of course, one can load lighter projectiles, and lighter powder charges, but the point of these heavy calibers was they intended as heavy caliber projectile at maximum velocity. Recoil isn't shoulder killing, seventy-six foot-pounds (103 Joules) by calculation, or about 50% greater than a .375 H&H.

This cartridge is considered unsafe to use for older rifles bored for the black powder version of this round due to the higher pressures generated by this loading. Therefore the cartridges which used cordite (Nitros) had thicker rims to aid in the extraction of stuck cases.

JAMES LONDON 450-400 3 inch NITRO EXPRESS DOUBLE RIFLE
The black powder version was considered appropriate for deer hunting and was usually chambered in a lightweight rifle. Unlike these, the Nitro version is the smallest of the British cartridges that can be considered as an appropriate dangerous game cartridge. It is practical for all-around use on African game. The .450-400 3¼ inch Nitro Express, like all the big caliber nitro express cartridges, was developed for shooting dangerous big game at close range, by intrepid hunters on foot in thick cover, using single-shot or double rifles.

Before the advent of the .375 H&H Magnum, it was one of the most popular cartridges worldwide considered as the minimum cartridge necessary when hunting dangerous game. That is certainly one of the favorite calibers s of famous African and Indian hunters during the Golden Age of the Safari.

The Nitro rifles tend to be quite heavy for the given chambering, probably because gun makers did not know that such weight was not necessary for this chambering. Some of the .450/400 3¼ inch Nitro Express rifles were quite light, but a great many were built on ponderous actions and weighed more than 11 pounds when 9½ would have been adequate. The  .450/400 3¼ inch Nitro Express rifles are heavier and were considered as the minimum cartridge necessary when hunting dangerous game.

The almost disappeared .450/400 Nitro Express is yet another slow big caliber, identical in performance to the .450 Marlin and modern .45-70.  The .450/400 NE sees tiny use today, kept alive by a small handful of enthusiasts for nostalgia- although it was once very popular.

Ruger No.1 Tropical1

  • Currently, .450/400 Magnum Nitro Express is chambered in the Ruger No.1 Tropical model single-shot rifle, with falling block action. It is an old classic in a modern form combined with the .450/400 cartridge, can span the range from European deer to Cape buffalo, and at more affordable price than a custom gun or vintage gun (from an auction) in this cartridge chambering.
  • The Tropical version can handle powerful big game cartridges, like the old .450/400 Nitro Express cartridge, which meant the mixture of a great old caliber with a classically styled rifle.

JAMES LONDON 450-400 3 inch NITRO EXPRESS DOUBLE RIFLE

.404 Jeffery - 10.75 x 73mm

.404 Jeffery - 10.75 x 73mm

Synonyms: .404 Jeffery Nitro Express / .404 ELEY Magnum / 10.5x73 / 10.75x73 / .404 Rimless Nitro Express

Although the legend of the .404 Jeffery is still alive in the opinion of many gun authorities, this excellent cartridge is the forgotten child of Africa. When the renowned, London gun and rifle maker W.J. Jeffery & Co first advertised a brand new cartridge, the .404 (actually .423 caliber ) in 1905, they were not able to assume that the .404 Jeffery would become an instant hit and ever since has been the standard by which dangerous game cartridges have been measured. As a result, the .404 became the standard dangerous game rifle throughout Africa in both the British and German colonies. Its use was so universal that when someone spoke of his ‘elephant rifle' it was taken as read that they were referring to the .404 unless otherwise specified.

The .404 became famous and widespread in Africa, where inexpensive bolt rifles let its performance be experienced by those who could not afford a double-barrel rifle for one of the .400 Nitro Express rounds. The .404 Jeffery was a standard issue of all the old Colonial game departments and game wardens simply because it worked with a manageable level of recoil for young African Game Scout who carried them almost exclusively.

Soon afterward, Westley Richards responded in 1909 with their .425 Magnum (actually .435 caliber) also based upon the .450/400 and Rigby joined the fray with their .416 in 1911.
While the .425 Westley Richards Magnum never developed the same following as other offerings, the .416 Rigby, on the other hand, gained all the glory, thanks to writers like Robert Ruark, but if the truth be told, it was not nearly as commonly used out here as the .404.

The only complain one will sometimes hear about the .404 was a lack of penetration on frontal brain shots at the big bull elephant. There were two reasons for this: the lower sectional density of the 400-grain .423 caliber bullet of the .404 (.319) and original Kynoch cordite-loaded ammo not attaining its factory-stated ballistics of 2,150 fps (655 m/s).

404 Jeffery, 450-400 N.E. 3`` or 400 Jeffery, 300 Remington Ultra Mag
The famous .404 Jeffery was designed to be a bolt-action cartridge that would duplicate the performance of the popular cordite-loaded rimmed .400 Jeffery and the .450/400 3¼-inch double-rifle cartridge, namely a 400-grain bullet at a velocity of 2,125 feet-per-second (648 m/s) delivering 4,020 foot-pounds (5,450 Joules) of kinetic energy. The 450 3¼" BPE (black powder express) cartridge when was loaded with smokeless powder in 1898, became the .450 Nitro Express.
However, even in its genuine black powder incarnation, the .450/400 was highly esteemed for its excellent deep penetration on dangerous game. Handling the new lower pressure, higher velocity cordite that was being introduced at the time, the .404 Jeffery could easily have attained a velocity of 2,400 fps (730 m/s) with its 400-grain bullet, much as it is usually charged today.

Anyway, the .404 cartridge was derived from the .450/400NE case and shares the same base dimension, as a whole raft of British rounds. However, the protruding rim of the .450/400, designed for break open double rifles, was replaced with a slightly rebated rim to ensure smooth feeding in magazine rifles. Moreover, the case was shortened to 2.87 inches to fit a standard Mauser 98 action.

Created to be the first dangerous game cartridge designed for magazine rifles, the .404 Jeffery was vastly popular for many years, and then died slowly over many decades. Conventional wisdom says that Jeffrey developed the first .404s on ex-military Mauser K-98 actions, mostly because the exclusive commercial Mauser distributor in Britain at the time was Rigby. Even in the beginning, Jeffery did not attempt to keep the .404 proprietary but released it to the trade. As a consequence, the .404 is also popular on the Continent. Hence Mauser built its own .404s, with the European metric designation of 10.75x73mm Mauser, as early as 1908.

As with most popular products, good design was the major factor. The original .404 Jeffery cartridge was shorter in case length than it is today.  The case body of the .404 is rather steeply tapered and without a belt, unlike many other magnum cartridges. The rimless design also contributes to smooth feeding from the box magazine of bolt action rifles. The neck is exceptionally long and seems almost to extend halfway down the case, much like the .30-30 Winchester.  When this cartridge was used as a parent design for the modern Ultra Magnums, it was very easy to increase capacity by just moving the shoulder forwards, thereby increasing the body dimensions of the case while the neck was made much shorter.

A well known and esteemed by gun enthusiasts the .404 Jeffery, now a century old and unlike originally used .423" bullets, modern cartridge utilizes .428" diameter projectiles, very similar in diameter to the .44 Magnum at .429."  The traditional load for the .404 was and still is a 400-grain bullet at 2,400 fps (730 m/s), identical in bullet weight/ velocity to the .416 Remington.

The .404 Jeffery is a good cartridge for hunting large, dangerous game, such as the big five of Africa or hunting bear or other big game at close quarters. With the standard 400-grain bullet, the .404 was a very popular, general-purpose cartridge in Africa and India. That is the load that made the caliber's s reputation.

.30-06 Springfield, .375 H&H, .404 Jeffery,
The original .404 loading of cordite (British long strand smokeless powder), drove a .423" diameter bullet of 400 grain (26 g)  at a muzzle velocity of 2,125 fps (648 m/s) and muzzle energy of 4,020 ft-lbs (5,450 Joules) - hot stuff in 1905. At one time Kynoch also loaded lighter 300-grain copper-capped bullets at 2,625 feet-per-second (800 m/s) with a muzzle energy of 4,595 ft-lbs (6,230 Joules), reportedly a devastating load on the large thin-skinned game and widely used in India and Ceylon on tigers. But the less ballistically sophisticated hunters of the time, however, too often used inadequately, this light, rapidly expanding bullet on thick-skinned game and failures predictably occurred. Kynoch soon discontinued the load in the face of its misuse.

Modern-day .404 ammo is much better and loaded a bit hotter than originally so it is possible to charge 400- grainers to the region of 2,350 fps (716 m/s) without any pressure signs. Since the characteristics and recoil are similar to other African dangerous game cartridges, the .404 obtains like the .416 Remington, a right balance of power versus tolerable recoil. Furthermore, it can be made a comparison with .416 Rigby and .416 Remington Magnum. Both rounds fire a 400-grain bullet at 2,400 feet per second (730 m/s) with a muzzle energy of about 5,000 foot-pounds force (6,800 Joules), which handily exceeds the ballistic performance of the .404 Jeffery but at the price of greater recoil.

In this configuration a 10-pound Rigby recoils at about 62 foot-pounds of recoil (84 Joules). Proven in practice, those that can handle this recoil level are few and far between.  On the other hand, a 400-grain .404 at 2,150 fps (655 m/s) only produces about 50 foot-pounds (68 Joules). The conclusion is pretty clear, means that in similar weight rifles, a .404 is a lot more pleasant to shoot than .416 Rigby, which rifles, by the way, are significantly more expensive.

The .404 began to lose popularity and disappeared from common firearm usage in the late ‘60s, not because of any failing but rather as a result of the former colonies receiving their independence and naturally decreased interest of British hunters. With the decline in the use of large bore rifles Kynoch, the only British producer of the .404 Jeffery and many other British cartridges, ceased production in the 1960's.

Norma .404 Jeffery
In 1993, Dynamit Nobel announced it would restart production of .404 Jeffery ammunition, so currently, RWS, Norma of Sweden and Hornady are also offering .404 Jeffery ammunition.

Meanwhile, the primacy of hunting large dangerous species has been taken by an American cartridge, the .458 Winchester. It became the standard dangerous game rifle chambering for the next two decades despite its shortcomings of lack of penetration and the early compressed charges resulting in unreliable ammunition. Comparing shooting trajectories, most gun writers would describe the .375 Magnum as flat shooting and the descriptions of the .458 tend to include words like ‘mortar or rainbow trajectory.' In reality, the point of aim for any of the big bore rifles is virtually the same out to 150 meters."

The really exciting development that has flowed from the .404 has been the recognition of its excellent design features that maximize the potential of standard long action rifles. This is the development of modern cartridges based upon the .404.

The USA had never chambered rifles for any large bore British rounds, so the .404 began fading from the scene. This round, being a specialized African cartridge that had never been chambered by any mainstream USA gun maker the .404 remained relatively obscure to USA market for almost 100 years. All this changed a few years ago when Winchester and Remington released a barrage of new magnum cartridges based upon the .404. In the early years of 21.st century both Winchester and Remington jumped on the bandwagon with a pallet of Super Short, Short and Long Ultra Magnums based upon the .404. Interestingly, while Remington acknowledges their parentage, Winchester claims their line to be an entirely new design.

In any case, there are now no less than 11 cartridges on offer from the mainstream USA ammunition manufacturers based upon the .404.  Also lately, the .404 as a parent case has seen a revival in use by wildcatters. The most recent .404, are the .404 Dakota and .375 by Dakota Arms and the .400 Tembo by Velocity USA while being proprietary cartridges they duplicate the performance of the .404 Jeffery.

  • Certainly, you know those personality tests in a style of what kind of shoes you wear I'll tell you what kind of person you are. The following story from a Professional Hunter with years of experience in Africa is in a similar context: tell me what rifle you have…
  • - “When a client shows up in camp with a .375 Holland & Holland, you immediately know that you have a practical and able chap as a customer, a wise and knowledgeable hunter who will listen to reason.
  • - When a client shows up in camp with a .458 Win Mag, you know that most likely the only experience the hunter has had is reading the pages of Outdoor Life magazine, probably 30-year-old editions.
  • -         When a client shows up in camp with a Remington or a Weatherby in any caliber, you know the hunter’s experience probably does not extend past the clerk at the gun counter.
  • -         When a client shows up with a double rifle, you know you have an elitist for a customer, much like the guy coming down the charter boat dock at the marina carrying a fly rod, and you approach him with caution.
  • -         When a client shows up in a camp with a .416 Rigby, you know you have someone who has studied and respects the rich history and traditions of the sport of dangerous-game hunting.
  • -         And when a client shows up in camp with a .404 Jeffery, you know this is someone who cares enough about said history and traditions to go to the immense trouble of building and loading a gun and cartridge long sacrificed to the gods of mass production and commercialism. You take a liking to this guy immediately.”

.404 Jeffery -10.75x73mm

Sinonimi: .404 Jeffery Nitro Express / .404 ELEY Magnum / 10.5x73 / 10.75x73 / .404 Rimless Nitro Express

404 Jeffery, 450-400 N.E. 3`` or 400 Jeffery, 300 Remington Ultra Mag
